A crazy first day!
Wow, what a day! I boarded the flight with no difficulties, got little to no sleep because of the awesome movie selection on the plane (even though I took a benadryl to try to knock myself out), survived customs, gathered all of my bags in tact, found my driver (Danny was awesome in his little compact mitsubishi), and met up with my international advisor, Julian, who immediately gave me tour of the campus and then let me with my Equine Therapy Center (ETC) boss, Kathryn, where I remained the rest of the day with. Least to say, I am exhausted after 48 hours with no sleep!!! I am about to crash. I met so many people today including Hartpury's administration and the girls that I will be working with (Fiz, Steph, Lauren, Vicky, and Tilly). England is just as lush and green as PA and the vegetation is much the same except dotted with houses, pubs, and cathedrals that are hundreds of years old! It is cooler here with no humidity. There are approximately 3300 students (800 of which live on campus). I have been settled into a small suite-style singly dorm room which will fit me just fine for the next 6 weeks. The ETC is fabulous with amazing pieces of equipment such as the high-speed dry treadmill, hydro-treadmill (water pool), x-ray technology for equines, digital biomechanics imaging (in 3-D!), 4 indoor riding arenas, a gorgeous indoor show with spectacular bleachers, and soooo mcuh more! I will be beside myself working with all of the equipment and the 5 patients that currently reside in the ETC. My duties will consist of general maintenance of the horses, using the treadmills, following veterinarians around, watching in equine surgeries (their LA anesthetic machine and padded rehab room is SOO COOL), traveling to 3 shows, and working in the cattle/sheep barns. I might even get to help out in the stallion barns! With all of the change and excitement I am ready to collapse in my bed (even though it is only 6 PM here). We'll see, I think I might wait a few more hours. Well, I love you all and I will see you in 6 weeks!
